Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) chief executive officer Michael Macdonald Bartlett said more than 150 government quarters in Lautoka were infested with Asian Subterranean Termites (AST).

He revealed this during the Termite Control Stakeholders meeting in Lautoka last week.

“The perfect example is what we saw with 150-plus dwellings that are infested just from one organisation. We’ve treated two of those houses out of 157. The first two houses are going to be destroyed,” he said.

“We have a few options going forward and one is making chemicals at affordable levels to the general population,” he said.

The Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Sakiusa Tubuna said the mass termite infestation of government quarters in Lautoka was a concern.

“I’m dumbfounded about the whole thing. I haven’t seen it before,” he said.

He said the meeting was to look at ways to address the issue.
