Digicel Fiji will spend the next 12 months trialing 5G.

5G is fast, said Digicel regional chief executive officer (CEO), Shally Jannif yesterday.

Ms Jannif was joined by the acting Minister for Communications, Viliame Gavoka, Digital Transformation, Cybersecurity and Communications director general, Tupou’tuah Baravilala, and Digicel Fiji chief executive officer, Farid Mohammed at the official announcement at Valelevu.

“This is important because smartphones and the booming internet of things means that data traffic is increasing,” she said.

“5G delivers faster downloads, seamless streaming, and gaming in real-time.

“Everybody wants that.

“We rely on it.”

Ms Jannif said the 5G technology portrayed Fiji as an advanced commerce hub.

“With 5G technology, we support a wide range of new applications, including autonomous vehicles, remote healthcare, and smart cities.”

Mr Gavoka said the 5G network would ease communication for tourists and travellers.

“Airlines and crafts depend on it for safe navigation,” he said.

“Retailers, medical professionals, students, farmers – essentially everyone.

“For an island nation like us, connectivity is ten-fold more important.”
