The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Atonio Lalabalavu, will be travelling with a team to look at the electricity supply problems at Levuka Hospital.

The hospital cannot operate its x-ray machine, some of its labs, and morgue due to the issue.

“The issue with Ovalau is unique. It is to do with the overall structure of the hospital. There is in regards to electrification which supplies the electricity to operate the x-ray machine, some of the labs and morgue,” Dr Antonio said.

“I am taking a team from our development partners to Ovalau to look into these matters. The power issue has been there for a while.”

Patients have to travel to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital to undergo x-ray and people are buried on the same day or the day after because the morgue is not cold enough to preserve the corpse.

A team from the Ministry of Health and its development partners will assess the situation and take action to address the problem.
