Acting Director DPP Refutes Claims Of Interference

Acting Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) David Toganivalu has refuted claims that he had been directed to speed investigation into leaders of the previous government.
While responding to media queries yesterday, Mr Toganivalu said he had neither been directed nor advised to speed up investigations into former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s case.
“No I have not been directed to speed up or to take any cases,” Mr Toganivalu said.
“I just walk in that door and take cases that are put on my table.”
Mr Toganivalu was also asked to respond to claims regarding apprehension of former leaders as a ‘witch hunt’, a term that has been constant with critics of the Coalition Government.
He said his office worked on cases referred to them by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
“We don’t go, pick and choose cases that come to us,” Mr Toganivalu said.
“We just receive matters that are referred to us from the Fiji Police Force, especially from the director CID.
“They do their investigation independently of our office, we handle the prosecutions.
“As compared to FICAC, they have their own investigation in house.”
