A Labasa man is baffled and in depression after thieves broke into, stole belongings and set fire to his two-bedroom house.

Mahendra Kumar, 59, of Nabekavu said last Thursday he went to drop his partner to Nabouwalu as she was travelling to Suva by boat.

The former police officer said he was so tired that he parked his vehicle at one the police post along the Nabouwalu Highway and slept for a while.

He said a neighbour saw his house fully engulfed in fire and gave him a call around 5am.

“By the time I reached home after three hours, my house was razed to the ground,” Mr Kumar said.

“National Fire Authority (NFA) officers and I couldn’t save a thing.”

He said when the police completed their initial investigation, he searched through the property and found out some brand new items were missing.

“It was like a group of men stole items, ate some food from the fridge and threw it near my vegetable garden then burnt the house,” he said.

“Such kind of action is not humane and burning a house to leave a family homeless is cruel.”

He said it was about 10 years ago he bought that property with the house and later renovated it.

Recently, he carried out renovation and bought new household items.

Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said they are waiting for the NFA report which would ascertain the cause of the fire.

Anyone willingly to assist Mr Kumar can contact him on mobile number 9201831.
