‘Honey Business Going To Be Village Business’

Asena Isalei was one of the few Yasawa women who hoped to tap into the Bee Products business.
Ms Isalei was among villagers who travelled from the island to be part of the one-week first Pacific Island Bee Congress of the Pacific Island Beekeepers at the Tanoa International Hotel, Nadi yesterday.
There are seven villages in the district of Naviti and two representatives from each of these villages were selected to be part of the congress.
Beekeeping was introduced to Naviti at the beginning of the year and Ms Isalei said she was one of the few women who took advantage of it.
“This honey making business is going to be a village business. I am really interested in this beekeeping business. I was fortunate that I was chosen to be part of this congress.
“I know this event will help me learn more products from beekeeping that will help generate income for me and my village.”
“I love this beekeeping farming because it doesn’t require a lot of work. I can just harvest at my home,” she added.
Alusio Vumainabuke, a Beekeeping Instructor and a farmer said behind every stint of the bee, there was wealth.
“Fijian is not used to beekeeping just because we are afraid of bees. Behind that stint, there is a lot of money and income we receive.
“We have a lot of nectar in Fiji, in the interior and outer islands.
