Alleged Wife Killer Appear In Court

A sugarcane farmer accused of allegedly killing his wife at Qeledamu, Labasa has been remanded in custody by the Magistrates Court in Labasa.
Shalendra Kumar, 48, appeared before Magistrate Safaira Ratu charged with one count of murder.
It is alleged that on May 20, he killed Nazmin Nisha inside the house using a cane knife.
Magistrate Ratu questioned prosecutor Laniani Musuwaqa of the accused’s relationship status with the deceased.
Ms Muruwaqa replied that the deceased was the accused’s de-facto partner.
Kumar said he understood the charge and admitted that he murdered his wife.
The sugarcane farmer opted for the Legal Aid Commission’s assistance.
Magistrate Ratu explained to the accused that he would be further remanded in custody and the case would be transferred to Labasa High Court as the alleged offence was indictable.
She also advised him that bail cannot be granted since this was a domestic violence case.
The case has been adjourned to June 19.
