The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) faces unprecedented challenges in decision-making as traditional leaders.

These sentiments were shared by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere during the opening of the GCC meeting yesterday:

Ratu Wiliame said the GCC had a duty to protect, defend, and promote comprehensive issues that affect all Fijians, while upholding the rule of law.

“As we embark on this new chapter, it is crucial that we reflect on our traditional bonds with one another as iTaukei, as well as with the government and the church,” Ratu Wiliame said.

“It is of utmost importance that the reassembled Great Council of Chiefs fulfills its original purpose, which is the preservation of our land, marine resources, and natural ecosystem, guided by relevant legislation.
