The weeklong Great Council of Chiefs event has been incident-free says Fiji Police Force team leader on Bau, ASP Aqela Tuirewa.

“Our job here is to provide security. We established here on Monday and so far, it has been quiet and incident-free,” he said.

Police personnel were among a contingent of support staff on the island, on Bau landing and Nadave who provided a range of services.

“We account for all the people arriving to the island, We count all the people who are coming in boats, those who are going out…we record all that. In the first day, there were 348 facilitation – boats leaving the landing. Yesterday, the opening day of the meeting, more than 200 boats came in,” ASP Tuirewa said.

“Yesterday, a total of 1,880 people were here on the island, including chiefs and their delegations, invited guests, support arms like police, army and villagers from the three villages,” she said.

The three villages on Bau Island are Bau, Soso and Lasakau, with a total population of 409.

With the exception of Namosi, traditional delegations from different provinces in Fiji are still coming to the island to visit the Vunivalu of Bau and to the GCC.

There are 110 police personnel on Bau providing a 24-hour security and surveillance service
