Ba Trio Cultivating Success On Tobacco Fields

Irinieta Naisau, Reshma Devi and Sulita Naibita hope to make a difference in tobacco farming.
The three women are part of the 12 successful tobacco farmers in Ba in the Western Division.
After the visit of the British American Tobacco BAT Fiji company representatives on Thursday to the farmers, the women shared their story of planting tobacco on a one-acre land they were given.
Ms Naisau has been a planting the crop for two years.
“I have seen its benefits,” she said.
“I put food on the table and support my children’s education. I decided to continue this year. We always work as a family on the farm.”
Ms Devi said income from the farm paid for her two children’s education, and her family.
“Staying home is not enough for us,” she said.
“Farming is a good way to earn a living for women. We have strong hands to build our families and cultivate the land.
“Most of us have moved from sugarcane farming to tobacco farming because we only harvest in short period of time.”
Ms Naibita, a mother of seven, looks forward to a good harvest in the next three months.
Meanwhile, BAT provides resources and support for the farmers to help in good tobacco yields.
