‘Ridiculous Fares’

Mr Goundar has urged the Government not to leave the shipping industry as a doormat when it comes to the transportation sector. “The fuel prices have gone up to $3.50 per litre, the price of bus, taxi and minibus fares went up, but not shipping services,” he said.

Two shipping operators are banking on the 2023-2024 National Budget to cushion its day-to-day challenges.

Goundar Shipping Limited (GSL) and South Island Shipping (SIS) want the Government to review fares and freight charges as current regulations are barely meeting operational expenses.

Shipping tycoon and GSL managing director, George Goundar, said the current fares were ridiculously low.

“Why has our fares not been reviewed for the past 12 years?” he said.

“They have done the bus and airline fares, which is ridiculous.”

“Shipping is the one that pulled us through during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

Mr Goundar has urged the Government not to leave the shipping industry as a doormat when it comes to the transportation sector.

“The fuel prices have gone up to $3.50 per litre, the price of bus, taxi and minibus fares went up, but not shipping services,” he said.
