Farmers Fear GCC Will Take Away Land Leases

The reinstatement of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has created a sense of fear among some Nadroga Indo-Fijian farmers.
During the Budget Consultation on Tuesday at Lomawai Temple in Sigatoka, the majority of farmers present raised their concern with the Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad.
A Lomawai sector farmer, Krishna Murti Goundar said they were worried the reinstatement of GCC will take away their land leases.
“We fear they will favor more of the iTaukei resources and interest,” he said.
“News reports coming out of some villagers has created a lot of fear among us.
“Are they true? We need clarification on that.”
Mr Prasad told them not to believe in rumors that were going around.
“Nothing like that will happen. Before, GCC was already there and we still had land leases and processes to follow till now,” Mr Prasad said.
