Government will introduce a new scholarship scheme to replace the current Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS).

The Minister for Finance Biman Prasad said the particulars as well as criteria of the new scholarship scheme would be detailed in the 2023-2024 National Budget.

He was responding to concerns raised by One Nation Our People youth club president Abdul Zorhab during budget consultations at the Sugar City Mall carpark in Lautoka on Wednesday.

Mr Prasad said Government would write off the $630million debt incurred from TELS.

“In the previous scheme, even if you come from a poor family, and you had good marks, you didn’t get a scholarship you had to go and take a loan and by the time you graduate from the university depending on the course you do, you end up with $30,000 or $40,000.
