Fiji Women’s Volleyball Trial Date To Be Confirmed

The Fiji Volleyball Federation (FMF) will soon hold their national women’s trials to finalise the squad for the Honiara Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands from November 19 to December 2.
Speaking to SUNsports today, assistant coach Emori Bakewa said the national women’s squad has their training every Saturdays to accommodate players travelling from the West.
“We always train for three hours,” he said.
“For the national trials we’ll have to talk it over with the head coach before confirming the date.”
The 36-member national women’s volleyball training squad will be reduced to 22 players after the trials.
“There was a fitness test done before the training squad started training,” he said.
Bakewa said booking the facilities for indoor training with the Fiji Sports Council is a bit difficult because of clash in bookings.
“Our aim is to stand at the medal podium of this Pacific Games with either a gold, silver or bronze medal.”
“We didn’t go to the 2019 Pacific Games because we didn’t have the chance to go.”
Bakiyawa said most of the players are unemployed but they have been helping them out with their finances so they could attend training.
“Most of them are travelling from the West and that is $50 a day to cater for their bus or van fare.”
“This also includes their taxi fare from the bus stand to the Vodafone Arena.”
“It’s quite hard, once in a week (Saturday) three hours training and travelling back on the same day but we are coping with it,” he added.
