More is needed to be done to help safeguard the marine environment as Fiji is surrounded by the ocean.

As World Ocean’s Day raises awareness on the importance of the ocean protection, Shipping Services Fiji Human Resources Assistant Phillip Mosese is calling for more efforts on ocean protection.

“More effort is needed to counter the change in tides to the Blue Economy,” Mr Mosese said.

“With marine organisms and habitats heavily damaged or depleted, more is needed to be done to help safe guard the Marine Environment now more than ever.”

Shipping Services Fiji has also helped with Fiji’s stand for sustainable blue economy by carrying out clean-up campaigns at the foreshore at the front of its Lami Head Office.

Mr Mosese said the survival of the Blue Economy is dependent on humans hence the need to change the way the marine environment is treated.

“Little things like disposing of rubbish correctly will go a long way towards this.

“It not only will benefit the human environment but it will also be beneficial for the Blue Economy in replenishing all depleted and damaged organisms and habitats.”

Shipping Services Fiji are the local agents for Maersk Line and Hamburg SUD.

He said the ocean was very important because the shipping industry survives from travelling to and from different countries via sea.

Mr Mosese calls for more ocean protection the ocean because without the protection of the ocean, the shipping industry would not survive.

“Maersk is leading the way in the shipping industry by being the first shipping line in the world to secure green e-methanol container vessel operating on carbon neutral fuel.”

He said it was important to mark World Oceans Day as it provided information to the general public on the impact to the marine environment from the choices people make.
