Sugarcane lorry drivers in the Western Division supplying cane to the Lautoka Mill are requesting increased security for drivers who park outside the mill during the crushing season.

This is in light claims that some trucks parked at the mill are broken into and drivers being robbed.

Moto, Ba sugarcane truck driver Amit Chand said the long wait to offload sugarcane and sugar mill breakdowns were ongoing issues, however the security of drivers needed to be addressed.

Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) chief executive officer Bhan Singh said the factory maintenance team had been able to address the majority of issues within the first two weeks of the season.

The Minister for Sugar and Multi- Ethnic Affairs Charan Jeath Singh said he would ensure the security concerns raised would be addressed.

“I’m not aware of these issues, anyway this is the first time that I am hearing from you, but I will talk to the CEO to see what he is doing to address this problem,” he said.
