Chinese Embassy Condemns Arrest Of Nationals

The Chinese Embassy condemned the arrest of two Chinese nationals involved in illicit activities on June 8 in Fiji, labeling it as illegal act.
The operation was jointly carried out by the Fiji Police Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) from the United States.
The Chinese Embassy accused US law enforcement personnel of entrapping Chinese nationals through a “sting operation” conducted in Fiji and criticised them for pressing charges against Chinese entities and individuals.
“Fiji cooperated with the US and arrested Chinese nationals on the grounds of violating American laws without notifying the Chinese Embassy. It seriously infringes the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese nationals and companies concerned.
“China strongly condemns the US move and has lodged solemn representations and strong protest to the US and Fijian side.”
The embassy said this was typical arbitrary detention and unilateral sanction, which was completely illegal.
“We do not expect that Fiji falls into a trap plotted by the US, unintentionally becomes an accomplice to the US by assisting it’s ‘sting operation’ in the Fiji territory.
“This will jeopardise the long-term friendly China-Fiji relations. As of now, the Fijian Government has well understood China’s concern and affirmed its commitments to avoiding the similar situation from repeat.”
