Some teachers assigned to the maritime areas are still using pit toilets.

Nacanieli Yalimaiwai, one of the directors of the Lau Education Charitable Trust (LECT) said this during the Lau Provincial Council meeting yesterday.

“It was disheartening to witness ,that, even in 2023, there are teachers’ quarters that rely on pit toilets. This has been the case since the 1980s, and it is a situation that needs to be addressed,” Mr Yalimaiwai said.

LECT will assist in improving such conditions through their funding policy.

They believe in working collaboratively than providing handouts, fostering self-reliance within the people of Lau.

“For instance, we engaged with the Tikina of Nayau regarding the teacher’s quarters there. After costing the installation of flush toilets, it was estimated at $15,000. We proposed that they raise $5,000, and we would contribute $10,000 to cover the remaining cost.”
