The sponsorship of $20,000 from Fiji Sun will assist the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) rugby side take part in the 2023 International Defence Rugby Championship (IDRC) in France next month.

RFMF rugby president Commodore Humphrey Tawake said yesterday such sponsorship has many rippling benefits.

“This is not the first time Fiji Sun is supporting RFMF rugby, we are grateful to such partnership as the club through this kind of support has nurtured Flying Fijians, Fijian Warriors and Fijian Drua,” Commodore Tawake said.

“The team has commenced preparation to defend its title in France which will be no easy task noting the advanced preparation of other Defence Force rugby teams,” he said.

“We hope that this sponsorship will assist us for another successful campaign.”

Fiji Sun has been supporting the club since 2015 when RFMF won the IDRC. RFMF was the winning defending champion after beating United Kingdom Armed Forces 31-17 in the final in Japan in 2019.

The tournament is played every four years.

This year’s IDRC includes 12 armed forces with the US Armed Forces, British Armed Forces, Australia Defence Force, New Zealand Defence Force and the France Armed Forces to mention some.

The tournament takes place from August 6 to September 16.

According to the World Defence Rugby website Tonga is taking part for the first time this year and is pooled with UK, Georgia and Spain. Tonga faces UK on August 19, Spain on August 23 and Georgia on August 27. Tonga replaces South Africa who had dropped out of the championship.
