In Fiji child abuse is perceived by many healthcare professionals as a hidden problem, says Leba Maikale Ramu.

The 18-year-old of Naitasiri is a queen contestant in the Digicel Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival, where she will raise awareness on child abuse.

Sponsored by Galaxy Hotel, Miss Ramu hopes to be a voice in the global campaign to save children from being abused.

“I encourage parents, guardians, communities, faith-based leaders and the general public to create open, empowering and safe conversations with children,” the All Saints Secondary School Year 13 student said.

“The Fijian Government has declared its commitment to child protection by not only ratifying the convention on the right of the child, but also ensuring we have in place the legislative tools to safeguard our children.”
