Build Seawall To Protect Vuniwai

Vuniwai villagers of Namara, Labasa, are requesting Government to help them build a seawall to prevent washing away of soil during high tides and floods.
More than 30 villagers have been fundraising to help build the seawall.
Tribal leader Vasio Bonibisai said requests were made to the previous governments and the Commissioner Northern’s office, but to no avail.
Mr Bonibisai said the village was prone to flooding most of the time.

“We are always on alert when there’s heavy rain, even recently when Tropical Cyclone Ana hit the country,” he said.
Villager Irimaia Bukadakai shared similar sentiments.
“Back then, when flood waters inundate the village and since we are close by the Labasa River, flood waters can literally carry us out of our homes,” he said.
“Building a seawall can prevent this. We have made a small contribution to build one, but it’s not enough.”
