In a sudden twist of events it has been established that the Fijian Teachers Association general secretary, Paula Manumanunitoga, applied for the Permanent Secretary for Education position.

It comes as the line minister, Aseri Radrodro, with the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) and Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) raised concerns over the appointment of the incumbent, Selina Kuruleca last week.

By law, permanent secretaries are appointed by Public Service Commission (PSC) with the approval by the Prime Minister.

The PM also has the powers to revoke the appointment.

All permanent secretaries, except Ms Kuruleca started on July 3, after the FTA, the FTU and Mr Radrodro questioned her appointment.

In an attempt to mitigate the situation, the PM said he would revoke Ms Kuruleca’s appointment only to go back on his initial approval a day later.
