Nausori, Savusavu Towns To Get Garbage Trucks

Two Municipal Councils each received new garbage trucks yesterday.
Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Katamotu handed the trucks to Nausori and Savusavu Town councils.
Mr Katamotu said Government provided solid waste subsidies to ensure the uninterrupted services since the expanded responsibility of the councils since 2018.
“I am pleased to acknowledge the dedication of our municipal councils, which have been providing solid waste collection services even in informal settlements,” Mr Katamotu said.
It is noteworthy that the municipal councils have been diligently servicing non-rateable houses and premises within their boundaries without imposing any garbage levy. Due to an increase in solid waste volume and coverage, the costs associated with waste collection and disposal has also risen over time.”
He said the trucks would help reduce the councils’ operational costs.
“Efficient solid waste collection relies heavily on labour and fleet management. My ministry took the initiative last year to fund compactor trucks for Nausori, Savusavu, and Tavua Town councils,” Mr Katamotu said.
“These councils collectively procured three compactor trucks valued at $870,000 through a transparent procurement process, showcasing an excellent example of shared services. Nausori, Savusavu, and Tavua Town councils were identified due to their challenging financial positions and the critical need for improved essential services.”
Tavua Town Council is yet to receive its garbage compactor.
