The survivors of the tragic Ferris wheel accident at the Laucala Bay Fiji Showcase on June 30, are hoping that the outcome of the investigation will be revealed soon.

More than a month later, Ravina Reshma and Supriya Reshma Sharma are still waiting the results of the investigation.

Ms Reshma said they could only hope for a thorough investigation to take place, preventing future accidents of a similar nature.

“I don’t know why it is taking so long, but I hope they are treating the investigation seriously because a young girl with so much to live for, died due to the negligence of certain individuals,” Ms Reshma said.

“The staff from the ministry visited us only once, and that was when we were released from the hospital. Until now, no one has updated us about the investigation.”

Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry has also raised questions about the delay in releasing the final report on the Ferris wheel accident.

“Why the delay? Don’t the lives of ordinary people matter?” Mr Chaudhry questioned.

“The families of the victims are anxious to receive answers regarding what caused the fatal accident. They are frustrated with the authorities’ lack of concern. For instance, the minister stated that inspectors meticulously follow stringent standard operating procedures before any amusement ride installations. If this is the case, how did the accident occur?

“Secondly, they claim it took 45 minutes for an ambulance to arrive at the scene, and the victims did not receive any attention during that time. Meanwhile, the seriously injured women lay on the ground unattended. Bystanders who attempted to help and take them to the hospital were reportedly stopped by police officers present at the site.”

He said one month was sufficiently a long time for the ministry to have completed its report on the incident.

“Indeed, an independent investigation is necessary, as the ministry has much to answer for in terms of its apparent lack of concern regarding this matter,” Mr Chaudhry said.
