FNU provides TVET training for street dwellers, street kids and residents of squatter and informal settlements
The Fiji National University (FNU) is providing short course training for street dwellers, street kids and residents of squatter and informal settlements in the Central Division at its TVET Centre at Robertson Road from September 11-15, 2023.
The initiative is part of the University’s commitment to ensuring that quality training and education is accessible to all.
Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba said the training would consist of Domestic Electrical Installation, Basic Screen Printing, Basic Cookery, Small Engine Repair and Household and Sanitary Plumbing courses.
“Through this collaborative initiative, and in line with the Ministry of Education’s focus on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) delivery, FNU is commencing this training to provide about 100 participants with formal training,” she said.

“The sessions will be conducted over five days with about 25 students per course.”
“Following the training, these students would be able to utilise the skills learnt to improve their living through starting new ventures, sustainably utilising the resources around them, contributing to their community and societal development and being self-sufficient.”
Pro-Vice-Chancellor TVET, Dr Isimeli Tagicakeverata added that through the TVET Pasifika unit, the University would ensure that trade courses would be provided to all students who required further studies.
“As a dual-sector University, FNU has always provided TVET and higher education programmes. Our short courses and trade programmes can be utilised by those who require formal training,” he highlighted.
“After completing these trainings, we also have study pathways that students can pursue through our Certificate and Diploma programmes before upskilling further into undergraduate and postgraduate studies.”
Household and Sanitary Plumbing course participant, Veronika Tabuya expressed her gratitude to FNU and the Ministry of Education for providing the short course training.
