Nadi Bush Fire Engulfs 15 Vehicles and Home

Two separate bushfires destroyed a car yard and home in Nadi on Friday.
In Legalega 15 vehicles were destroyed belonging to AAAK Group of Companies (Taxi 2000).
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said they established the fire started from a bush behind the vehicle yard.
Some vehicles were saved thanks to the swift response by National Fire Authority.
A taxi driver, Akash Nafis, 28, who has been driving for Taxi 2000 for the past seven years, said he lost most of his personal belongings, including his passport that were inside one of the taxis.
“The fire started outside of the compound and it quickly spread into the property,” he said.
Mr Nafis was the sole breadwinner in the family.
He said he was fortunate to be given another taxi to drive to keep supporting his family.
Group operations manager Mohammad Ali declined to comment.
Ms Naisoro urged the public to be vigilant about setting bush fire during this dry season.
National Fire Authority media liaison officer Epineri Vula said an investigation was underway.

Father and son homeless
At Nawaicoba outside Nadi Town, a father and son are homeless after a fire destroyed their four-bedroom corrugated iron and timber home last week.
The 32-year-old mechanic, Jatin Naidu, said they were not at home when the incident happened.
“It was destroyed with its content. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,” said Ms Naisoro.
