Let’s Go Local: Food Well Fiji Director Loves Organic
Salote Malani.

Social entrepreneurs do more than just deliver economic value. They provide solutions to social and environmental issues affecting communities in Fiji today.

Salote Malani is one of them.

As the owner and director of Food Well Fiji, she works to connect local growers and their fresh produce directly with consumers through the Food Well Fiji online platform.

Originally from Ono-i-Lau, Ms Malani’s small business was born from her desire to promote locally grown food.

So in 2020, she left a career in the education sector to build an enterprise with an important mission: empower communities to become healthier and more food-secure.

“When COVID-19 came about, I felt the need to get out of the education system and become an entrepreneur”, Ms Malani said.

“I wanted to understand why we weren’t fully utilising our natural resources, not only for food security and daily livelihood but as a nation for income-generating purposes.”

Ms Malani hopes Food Well Fiji can also be a tool to help children learn the importance of choosing healthy food options.

“I want to make our fresh food the ideal choice for Fijian families,” she said.

SunBiz met Ms Malani at the Young Entrepreneurs Council’s (YEC) Ease of Doing Business Round Table Discussions last Thursday.

The 41-year-old shared some insight into her business journey as well as her favourite local destinations for food and travel.

What do you enjoy about being a Micro Small and Medium Enterprise business owner?

I am learning from others and imparting what I’ve learnt to people.

But the most rewarding part of my journey has been helping people reach their potential.

What is your go-to food to eat?

I prefer home-cooked meals. So when I return from overseas trips, I have to have rourou.

What are your favourite local spots for delicious food?

The Suva Market for seafood and The Bar-Belle for local Fijian cuisine. I’m all for organic and nature-fresh food.

One of Salote Malani’s favourite places to eat is The Bar-Belle, which serves local Fijian cuisine.

What local destinations did you enjoy visiting?

I highly recommend Taveuni, the Lau group, Kadavu, Lomaiviti, and even interior Viti Levu.

These are areas where you can rejuvenate and experience nature on your own terms.

Lavena Waterfall, Taveuni.

What is your top bucket list Fiji destination?

I want to go to Kadavu. I would love to visit the uninhabited islands there.

A beach in Kadavu.

What makes Fiji such an attractive place for travel and to do business?

Fiji is becoming the heart of sustainable development.

You have opportunities to develop your business ideas and do so in a way that is sustainable. I feel that the Government has done a great job of providing that balance.
