MP Koya Tells Rabuka to Review the Science on Fukushima Issue

Opposition Member of Parliament Faiyaz Koya has called on the Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, to reconsider his decision on the Fukushima nuclear plant waste water discharge.
During the Parliament sitting yesterday, Mr Koya pleaded with the PM to re-evaluate the science.
Mr Rabuka’s endorsement of the Fukushima nuclear waste water dumping did not represent the voice of the majority, Mr Koya said.
Despite several calls for a no-go on the Fukushima nuclear waste water dumping – Parliament being the latest pleading ground – Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will not stand down.
He promised to closely monitor the science as Japan rolls out dumping plans in the Pacific Ocean.
Mr Rabuka called on Fijians to focus on other pressing environmental issues such as plastic pollution.

“The scientific evidence, technological advancements, economic considerations, and global precedents collectively support the understanding,” Mr Rabuka said.
“Japan has provided transparency and allowed for active engagement in the assessment of this situation and the solutions it has developed.”
Mr Rabuka said International Atomic Energy Agency affirmed the discharge of the treated wastewater meets international safety standards.
“This controversy is likely to persist for some time, given the complexity of the matter at hand,” he said
