Determined Adi Bags Law Degree

Adi Asenaca Natagane-Dakunivosa’s remarkable journey from single motherhood to becoming a lawyer is a testament to the power of unwavering dedication.
In her world, determination and resilience often paved the path to success.
Ms Dakunivosa is fondly known by many for her inspiring story of triumph over adversity.
Born and raised in Nabitu, Tokatoka, Tailevu, her life took a significant turn when her stepfather from Nakodu, Koro, Lomaiviti, entered her life when she was just 11 years old.
She speaks with immense gratitude for the role he played in raising her as his own. This early experience of love and support would lay the foundation for her future resilience.
She dreamt of becoming a teacher and she pursued this dream diligently and enrolled in the Bachelor of Education programme, majoring in English and Geography at the Fiji National University’s (FNU) Natabua Campus, after completing Form 7 in 2014.
However, personal circumstances forced her to return home in 2016, during her second trimester and pregnant with her son.
The challenges that followed were substantial.
“As a stay at home single mother with no job, I decided to apply for the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS). I re-enrolled at FNU, this time pursuing a Bachelor of Laws. My journey was far from smooth as the responsibilities of motherhood often required me to leave classes when my son needed me,” she said.
“In my second year of school, I secured a job at a private law firm, so I had to balance work commitments during the day with evening classes.”
The hurdles she faced failed to deter her from her academic pursuits.

“I am forever grateful to my mum and step-father, my law buddies, my mum’s family and my Lecturers for encouraging me to not give up and to keep pushing forward no matter what.”
Ms Dakunivosa’s perseverance and determination enabled her to complete her studies in 2022, but she did not get her Bachelor of Law certificate until her graduation on March 9 this year.
Her achievements did not stop there; she enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (PDLP/GDLP) programme, an essential step for aspiring lawyers, offered at FNU.
It marked a new chapter in her life as she was among the first cohort of students to study the GDLP programme offered at FNU.
She is now happily married, with her husband as a pillar of support.
Ms Dakunivosa’s journey is a shining example of resilience, determination, and the power of unwavering support.
Her story reminds us that with the right attitude and unrelenting dedication we can overcome any obstacle on the path to success.
