Jai Karan was Shivani Lata’s grandfather and hero.

Ms Lata, a nurse, was one of the four grandchildren raised by Mr Karan, 78, who died in an accident at Raviravi, Ba, yesterday.

Police said Mr Karan was allegedly trapped underneath a sugarcane truck which veered off a tramline track and landed in a culvert while reversing.

The accident happened at about 1am. Mr Lata was reported to have been guiding the truck.

vofficers were called to retrieve his body.

Ms Lata said at about 4am when she went to the scene, she could allegedly see her grandfather’s legs after being trapped under a pile of sugarcane.

“I begged the Police office that I can pay for a digger or whatever machine to get him out from there,” Ms Lata said.

“The Police officers told me they had arranged for everything. This is such a painful experience.

“I became who I am today because of him. I still live with my grandparents. He is a kind-hearted and healthy person. I miss him so much,” she cried.

Police investigations continue.
