‘Lets Go Local’-I’d Love To Go To Namosi: Adi Sovanatabua

Adi Sovanatabua Marama is a barista and cashier at Lava Café on Joske Street in Suva.
She is a mother to three girls and is from the village of Susui, Vanuabalavu.
The 36-year-old previously worked as a barista at two other locations – the former Gloria Jean’s Coffees on Thurston Street and Coffee Central (now Café Frangipani) at The University of the South Pacific, Laucala.
“I never thought of becoming a barista growing up. But while I was studying Foundation Science at Fiji National University (FNU), I was looking for work. My friend recommended a job at Coffee Central,” she said.
Adi Sovanatabua spent two years at Coffee Central before she left to raise a family.
She resumed her position in 2016.
She said the mutual support she shared with her co-workers was one of the things she valued most about her job.
“I enjoy what I do, and I love that I get to work with the staff here,” she said.
SunBiz spoke with the Lava Café barista to learn about her life, and career, as well as her best local travel and food experiences.
What do you enjoy about being a barista?
I love serving people. I especially love making our drinks just right for customers. My favourite coffee to make is cappuccino.
What are your favourite local spots for delicious food?
I love chilli chicken from Joji’s and Wishbone.
Where do you like to escape busy days at the café?
My Suva Picnic Park.
What have been your favourite local Travel experiences or destinations?
My mum’s village of Vatukarasa, Naitasiri. We have to travel by boat. There are small waterfalls nearby.
What are your top local bucket list destinations?
I’d love to go to Namosi. I’ve seen the waterfalls there. I would also like to visit my village in Vanuabalavu.

What makes Fiji such an attractive destination for travel and to do business?
Fiji is a peaceful country and our people are so friendly. When tourists visit, we welcome them with open arms.
