Editorial: Our ongoing journey to -true democracy

As Fiji marked 53 years of independence, we should reflect on a remarkable journey characterised by both challenges and triumphs.
Despite enduring three coups in 1987, 2000, and 2006, Fiji and its people continue to make strides towards achieving true democracy.
Our path to independence on October 10, 1970, was a momentous occasion, promising self-determination, and democratic governance.
However, our democratic journey faced significant disruptions, with three coups shaking its foundations. Yet, we have shown resilience and remain committed to democratic principles.
For eight years, following the 2006 coup, an interim government, led by Frank Bainimarama governed the nation, providing stability while raising concerns about democracy.
In 2014, Fiji took a significant step towards restoring democracy with elections that saw the FijiFirst party coming to power, governing for two terms until the 2022 elections.
Late last year, Fijians voted for change, and settled for a coalition government formed by The People’s Alliance, National Federation Party and SODELPA.
Despite facing criticism, the coalition government remains steadfast in addressing Fiji’s challenges.
One pressing challenge inherited by the new government was a heavy debt burden left by the previous administration.
The government’s efforts to manage this debt while meeting the immediate needs of the people reflect its commitment to responsible gover nance.
Moreover, the government has ushered in a new era of openness and inclusivity. Today; Fijians can now rally and speak freely without fear, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and valued.
As we reflect on our journey towards democracy; government is actively working to restore normalcy; drive economic prosperity; and boost investor confidence.
The nation’s potential for growth and development is significant, and government must take steps to harness this potential for the benefit of all Fijians.
But the buck doesn’t stop there – we need to rally behind government to bring about prosperity and economic stability for all; we need to work with Government, despite our differences.
As we celebrate 53 years of independence, it stands as a testament to our resilience and determination.
From coups to democracy, we will continue to progress, guided by the principles of democracy; inclusivity; and prosperity for all.
This ongoing journey has inspired many around the world with Fiji’s unwavering spirit. Happy 53rd anniversary, Fiji!
