Editorial: Well-played: Tactful but hard to miss

They were the kind of answers expected from leaders who chose to form Government.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Biman Prasad, who is leader of the National Federation Party, said ‘everyone makes mistakes’ adding they remained confident in Mr Rabuka’s capacity to lead the nation.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, echoed similar sentiments.
However, in the middle of his response, he added: “It’s time to review certain things. But I can assure you everything’s flowing perfectly.”
Mr Gavoka is SODELPA’s leader.
As for Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Trade, Cooperatives and SMEs Manoa Kamikamica said: “He (Mr Rabuka) made the call and he had to withdraw since it’s his prerogative.”
Mr Kamikamica is the deputy leader for The People’s Alliance Party.
We get it, the leaders were all trying to be positive. But between the lines of those tactful responses, are, as Fiji Sun has been reliably informed, raised eyebrows and questioning.
And these lines keep getting longer.
The PM’s ‘reassessment of intentions’ has undoubtedly put a strain on his leadership leaving a trail of questions.
After all, this isn’t the first time he’s had to make back-and-forth decisions. Remember the Selina Saga?
While that is well in the past, this debacle has hurt the Coalition Government and forced the legal experts with no choice but to officially put out a statement.
For now, the party leaders are choosing to take a positive approach and redirect their energy into nation-building.
Mr Prasad tried to shift the media’s attention by saying that NFP was very happy with the way the government had been running over the last 10 months.
“The business community, the private sector, everyone, including the people have understood why we presented such a balanced budget,” he said.
Mr Gavoka added: “These are part of the challenges but yes, dialogue is never ending, it will be resolved.”
For Mr Kamikamica: “He has the sole authority to nominate who seats in the cabinet and they need to have his confidence. Like one day, I might be fired and so you know I need to respect his authority.”
Meanwhile, Mr Rabuka is expected to make his decision regarding his ‘reassessment of intentions’ today.
