Chief Registrar fined $300

Fiji’s Chief Registrar, Tomasi Bainivalu has been fined $300 after pleading guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

He had appeared before Magistrate Warleen George at the Suva Magistrate Court yesterday. The court has invoked Section 15(1) (f) of the Sentencing and Penalties Act 2009 and discharged him without recording a conviction.

The court ordered Bainivalu to pay the $300 fine within 14 days or be liable to 30 days of imprisonment.

He has been disqualified from driving or obtaining a driver’s licence for a period of 90 days, effective. Bainivalu will have to surrender his driver’s licence to the criminal registry.

It was alleged that on June 16, Bainivalu drove a motor vehicle along Brown Street, Suva, while there was present in 100 millilitres of his blood a concentration of 92.4 milligrammes of alcohol, which was in excess of the prescribed limit. Bainivalu has 28 days to appeal.
