‘Free Palestine’ March Permit Denied

“Granting this march means we would also be setting a precedent. If we allow this procession, we must, in fairness, grant permission to pro-Israeli groups who may wish to express their perspectives and grievances.”

The Fiji Police Force has denied an application for a ‘Free Palestine’ March scheduled for November 4.

Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua confirmed this yesterday.

He said Police assessments, looking at risks and considering the potential for communal discord, have decided to deny the application.

“It’s essential for us to recognise the pain and suffering of all individuals involved in any conflict, including the ongoing strife in Israel and Palestine,” Mr Tikoduadua said.

“This decision was made by the Police. However, as Minister for Home Affairs, it is my duty to explain to the people the rationale of this decision.

“Granting this march means we would also be setting a precedent. If we allow this procession, we must, in fairness, grant permission to pro-Israeli groups who may wish to express their perspectives and grievances.”

He said this could lead to multiple marches, each with its own set of challenges, potentially escalating tensions within communities.

“My primary concern remains the safety and well-being of our community,” he said.

“It is important that we remain united as a nation while also acknowledging the suffering faced by those in Israel and Palestine.”

He added that Government’s collective responsibility was to ensure the safety of all Fijians.

“I implore you to understand that our decision isn’t a stand against your cause but a plea for safety, unity, understanding, and most importantly—peace.

“We can find alternative means to voice our concerns that don’t risk the peace and security of our community. Let’s come together, not as opposing factions, but as a united front, to find constructive ways to contribute to peace and understanding both here in Fiji and abroad.”
