ODPP files Appeal Against Bainimarama, Qiliho Acquittal

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution yesterday filed to appeal the not guilty judgement against former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and suspended Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho.
Magistrate Seini Puamau found that Qiliho and Bainimarama were not guilty of the charges against them on October12.
Bainimarama was charged with attempt to pervert the course of justice, while Qiliho was charged with abuse of office.
The allegation against Bainimarama is that sometime in July 2020, in his capacity as the Prime Minister , directed Qiliho as the Commissioner of Police to stop investigations into a Police complaint involving CID HQ in July 2019, which was an abuse of his authority and prejudicial to the right of USP.
The allegations against Qiliho is that sometime in July 2020, in his capacity as the Commissioner of Police, directed to CID director and an inspector to stop investigations into a police complaint involving CID HQ, which was an abuse of his authority and prejudicial to the right of USP.
