Fiji Hockey Qualifies for World Cup

The Fiji men’s and women’s hockey 5s teams have, for the first time, qualified for the World Cup.
The two sides will be participating in the FIH Hockey5s World Cup Oman next year. Hockey was first introduced to Fiji was in 1916.
The World Cup will be held in Muscat, Oman from January 24 to 31, 2024.
The two sides qualified following their outstanding performance at the Oceania Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifiers in Australia earlier this year.
Australia, New Zealand and Fiji secured the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively, in both men’s and women’s competition at the Gold Coast.
Fiji Hockey Federation (FHF) liaison officer to the World Cup Astral Lockington said this was a milestone with the sport starting off with only six teams playing in a regular competition when it began 107 years ago.
“Hockey has a deep-rooted tradition in Fiji,” Lockington said.
“Hockey was played by Fiji’s distinguished chief, politician and statesman, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, who was likely to be the first iTaukei recorded in Fiji’s hockey playing roster.
“This achievement is a historic milestone; the first ever for Fiji Hockey and a first for our small island nation. It also provides us with an extraordinary platform to promote Fiji and showcase the immense talent and passion that resides in our country,” Lockington added.
Like other sports preparing for the World Cup, financial support is crucial to prepare the 27-member contingent and FHF is seeking assistance.
The 27 include 10 players each in the men’s and women sides, two coaches, two managers, one assistant coach, one liaison officer and one physiotherapist.
A GoFundMe account has been set up by the federation to help in their fundraising; https://gofund. me/8e934566.
“Our estimated budget of approximately $320,000 encompasses expenses such as airfares, accommodation, transportation, uniforms, and other essential logistical arrangements.
“Your generous sponsorship would significantly contribute to the realisation of this dream for our national teams and the broader Fiji Hockey community.
“We are actively looking for sponsorship and welcome all assistance,” Lockington added.
