Speeding buses complaints lodged with CCoF

“These complaints indicate that certain bus drivers appear to have a blatant disregard for the safety of their passengers and other road users, engaging in reckless and dangerous driving practices that create a state of fear and anxiety,” Ms Shandil said.

The Consumer Council of Fiji (CCoF) is wary of reports from concerned customers about the safety and well-being of bus passengers.

Many have complained that most buses are being driven at exceedingly high speeds, endangering passengers’ lives and violating their safety.

Chief executive officer, Seema Shandil (pictured) said a recent complaint lodged at the council revealed that certain drivers were over-speeding and racing on the roads.

“These complaints indicate that certain bus drivers appear to have a blatant disregard for the safety of their passengers and other road users, engaging in reckless and dangerous driving practices that create a state of fear and anxiety,” Ms Shandil said.

“This not only endangers the lives of passengers but also represents a clear violation of their right to a safe and secure journey.”

Consumers have reported that a significant number of buses are playing loud music that not only disturbs the peace, but also has the potential to cause accidents and distract drivers.

She claimed that the cacophonous environment inside these buses not only affects the comfort and peace of passengers, but also poses a grave safety risk by diverting the attention of drivers.

“The recent bus accidents in the country, including a fatal one, serve as stark reminders that bus companies and drivers must prioritise passenger safety and adhere to responsible driving practices without exception,” Ms Shandil said.

“These accidents are tragic and unfortunate, underscoring the need for immediate corrective actions to prevent further loss of life.

“The council will actively collaborate with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to address these pressing issues and work towards implementing stringent measures to hold bus companies and drivers accountable.”

Fiji Bus Operators Association president, Richard Lal insisted that the regulatory body, LTA must intervene and address this issue.

“Basically, the enforcement from LTA and police should look after that, the law is in their hands not the operator’s hand,” he said,

“We groom them (bus drivers), we teach them, when they do the wrong thing, that’s where the law comes into effect.

“We have various responsibilities and that includes the safety of passengers, but there’s always something beyond our control. This is where relevant authorities (LTA) come in.”
