The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging road users to be wary of unfavourable road conditions because of the wet and windy conditions affecting the Fiji Group.

This follows a warning yesterday from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) of strong winds and heavy rain forecast for the next few days.

LTA acting chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa said motorists had been warned to take heed of safety messages from authorities because wet conditions may disrupt traffic flow and resulted in poor visibility for drivers.

“These conditions can lead to major road collisions,” Mr Rokosawa said.

Mr Rokosawa thanked drivers who were following road safety rules and members of the public who assisted LTA reduce reckless driving behaviours.

“LTA and its board wishes all Fijians an enjoyable, and safe Diwali weekend,” he said.

Joint operation

The LTA and Fiji Police Force have stepped up joint operations on road safety for the Diwali weekend. Enforcement teams had been working round-the-clock in the Central, Eastern, Western and Northern divisions to identify high-risk drivers.

“We continue to see a lot of drivers ignoring advisories and warnings from LTA on road safety,” Mr Rokosawa said.

“These are drivers who chose to disregard simple road safety rules and put others at risk.

“Over the past 24 hours, our joint enforcement teams across the country have been issuing Traffic Infringement Notices and warning letters to drivers who failed to comply with road safety regulations.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.

“Slow down, refrain from drink-driving and rest if you need to go for long journeys on the road.”
