Kamikamica Calls Attention to Fiji’s Climate Change Peril

Manoa Kamikamica brought attention to Fiji’s climate change peril and its effects on the local economy during an international trade conference.
The Minister for Trade, Cooperative, SME’s, and Communication led a delegation on Monday at the Pillar I – Trade Ministerial Meeting of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) in San Francisco, U.S.A.
As 14 IPEF partners hailed major advancements in the Trade Pillar discussions, the gathering represented a critical turning point, highlighting key issues that often affect economic growth.
For Mr Kamikamica, it was an opportune time to highlight Fiji’s struggles when it comes to climate change – while maintaining a steady trade and economic growth.
“Fiji, in its good-faith participation, seeks understanding and support from its IPEF partners during these trying times,” Mr Kamikamica said.
He said Fiji viewed IPEF as a unique platform that expanded the country’s horizons beyond the Pacific region.
This is Fiji’s first trade engagement of this kind and magnitude, offering unmatched chances to engage with varied partners and gain knowledge from their unique cultures, administrative styles, and goals.
The necessity of cooperation and partnership was emphasised by Mr Kamikamica, as discussions go into the upcoming year.
“Our negotiators have accomplished much, but the journey is far from over,” he said.
“We encourage IPEF partners to continue assisting partners like Fiji, in meeting high standard commitments, considering our vulnerabilities.”
