Walu Bay Car Crash Leaves Three People Hospitalised

A driver and a passenger of a Hyundai Creta are in serious condition at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital after their vehicle crashed into the rear end of a 22-wheeler truck along Foster Road, Suva, yesterday.
They were travelling towards Walu Bay.
Witness, Jay Narayan rushed out from a nearby Seafarers Centre, where he was taking his lunch break, when he heard a crashing sound.
“I rushed out to the scene of the accident to rescue people in the car,” he said.
Mr Narayan said he approached the car and saw a man holding a toddler stuck between the front and back seats.
“I tried my very best to rescue the child first; I could see oil spilling beneath the car, which was dangerous and could ignite a fire,” he said.
“The two women in the front seat were bleeding so badly; all I could do was save the child and carry him out of danger.”
The male passenger in the back seat was in a state of shock.
Workers from buildings nearby also came out to rescue the other two heavily injured passengers in the front seat.
“I must commend the National Fire Authority personnel for their quick response. They did a pretty good job getting the victims out and taking them to safety,” Mr Narayan said.
A team of Police officers and firefighters were at the scene as medical officers rushed the injured to hospital.
Divisional Police Commander and Superintendent of Police Farasiko Matawalu said the two victims in the car sustained serious injuries, while the truck driver sustained minor injuries.
Investigations are ongoing.
LTA Response
With the recent spate of road accidents, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is strongly urging all road users to take heed of safety advisories while on the move during this period.
The authority is urging motorists to slow down and reduce speed to suit the conditions. Wet roads can be slippery and affect stopping distance.
