When Sakiusa Bainivalu heard his name being called for the Dux Award, he didn’t make a big reaction.

He simply stood up, straightened his uniform, and walked towards the stage with quiet confidence.

For him, that short walk carried years of effort, sacrifice, and silent prayers.

It was a moment he had dreamed about since he was a young student at Queen Victoria School.

18 year old Sakiusa is from Nabukelevu, Kadavu, with maternal ties to Nabalabala, Saivou, Ra.

He is also the son of Alitia Bainivalu, Fiji’s Minister for Forestry and Fisheries.

But he will be the first to say that this achievement was not handed to him. He worked for every mark and pushed through every challenge himself.

His results show the effort he put in:
English – 87
Mathematics – 98
Chemistry – 98
Biology – 96
Physics – 97
A total of 380 out of 400.

His journey began with a simple promise.

“When I was in Form 3 and saw the Dux being awarded,” he said.

“I told myself that one day, that would be me.” It wasn’t an easy dream to chase.

The boarding life from Year 9 to Year 11 was tough. There were days he felt overwhelmed, tired, or discouraged. But he always reminded himself of the goal he set in Form 3.

What helped him most was his family.

“My parents prayed for me and supported me,” he shared.

“I couldn’t have made it through Year 12 or this year without them.”

Their belief kept him steady, especially during difficult study periods.

Now that he has earned the Dux title, Sakiusa is preparing for the next step.

He plans to study Biomedical Science at the University of Melbourne, hoping to build a future in the medical and science field.

Before leaving QVS, he shares a simple message for younger students:
“Keep pushing forward. Even if it feels slow, you will get there eventually.”
