Participants from six Pacific island countries, including Fiji, are part of the Fish 2.0 business development and application workshop at the Novotel Nadi.

The mainly seafood entrepreneurs and global investors present include islands from Kiribati, Tuvalu, Solomon, PNG and Vanuatu.

WWF Pacific conservation director Sally Bailey said: “The Fish 2.0 workshop is here to help participants work with their busineses and eventually to make sustainability makes good business sense.

“Sustainability in terms of resources you using be that from aqua culture or from ocean and if you have a good sustainable product and a fisherman and the results will be more sustainability in the long run.”

The Fish 2.0 was founded by Monica Jain of Manta Consulting in the US in 2013.

The Fish 2.0 is a forum for US and International investor’s including Fijians who meet with sustainable fishing and ocean-based business to promote the sustainable use of Pacific Ocean resources.

“Some are there and we need to help others with the right investors and the market,” Ms Bailey said.

“It is not just about market, collection and Pacific islanders to break through.

“More participants from Pacific islands business as there were fewer participants in the first place as we have others from the Tuna and Kai fisheries from the grassroots as well in the supply chain.”

Meanwhile, Fish 2.0 was launched early this year, a business competition that connects investors with seafood businesses giving them an opportunity to win over $180,000 in prizes, gain international visibility and find strategic partners.

According to Ms Bailey six winners from the Pacific will get to participate in the US competition in November.

Fish 2.0 is backed by a broad range of over 19 foundations, private investors and corporate bodies.
