The death of 40-year-old former able seaman, Sarosaro Lutuiwasa, has shattered New Year celebration plans for his family.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun at the Republic of Fiji Military (RFMF) burial ground at 9 miles on Friday, the wife of the late seaman, Sereseini Marau, said they had planned to celebrate the New Year at Nataleira Village. They have been married for 10 years.

She said they had gone with their only son, Sarosaro Lutuiwasa Junior, to spend Christmas at her village when the tragic news her beloved husband was relayed to her on Christmas Day.

“I could not believe what I was hearing because we had a plan and we were waiting for him at my village,” she said.

Her husband died at their home in Namuka-i-Lau, Wailekutu.

Ms Marau said she would now shoulder the burden of raising their three-year-old son.

Fiji Navy operations officer Lieutenant Commander Timoci Natuva described the late Mr Lutuiwasa as a quiet achiever.

“He was also a hard worker and kept to himself,” he said.

The late Mr Lutuiwasa had worked with the RFMF engineers and later joined the Navy in 2007 as a chef. He had also served in Sinai, Lebanon and Iraq. A full military funeral was accorded to him.

The RFMF Commander, Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto, Fiji Navy Commander Captain (Navy) Humphrey Tawake, and senior officers were also present during the funeral.
