Aust Fire Experts Called In To Help Probe 2 Big Fires

The National Fire Authority (NFA) has partnered with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) in Victoria, Australia, to investigate the two major fires that took place in Suva and Ba last Sunday.

This was confirmed by authority chief executive officer, Puamau Sowane yesterday. The two fires occurred on the same day at the Tappoo Group of Companies warehouse in Raiwaqa and the Ba Central Market Arcade.

He said investigations had begun after the conclusion of a virtual meeting on Tuesday.

“We don’t want to leave any stones unturned because they were big fires and we want to determine the actual cause,” Mr Sowane said.

“We engaged them so that our findings are somewhere near to their standard.”

The NFA process started yesterday (Wednesday) from Tappoo Warehouse and the team will move next to Ba.

“We had our virtual meeting on Tuesday with their CEO, chief fire officer and fire investigator,” Mr Sowane said.

“They won’t be able to come across to Fiji because of the 14-quarantine period when they arrive.

“So considering that, by that time the weather would have deteriorated all the evidence.”

After the meeting, Mr Sowane said they were confident with their partner’s standards.

“They have sent us the sets of the testing procedures that they want us to carry out,” he added.
