Autopsy Result Shows Namadi Woman Drowned

It was around 10am on Friday October 15, when a 14-year-old boy discovered the body of a 53-year-old woman floating in a creek behind their home in Namadi Heights.

According to autopsy results by the Fiji Police Force, the woman’s death has been classified as drowning.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the findings of the postmortem examination.

But mystery remains on how the woman made her way to the creek where her body was found.

The family staying next to the creek claim they saw flashlights near the creek the night prior.

The place where the body was found is behind the family home of Merelita Vakacegu.

Her son Luke, initially saw the body and disregarded it.

“He saw a pink bundle in the creek. It was on the other side. We initially thought it was a pile of rubbish,” Ms Vakacegu said.

She said it was not until after 10am when the body floated towards their side of the creek that they began to make out that it was a person.

“That is when we called the Police.”

Flashlights

Ms Vakacegu said her sister saw flashlights along the creek on Thursday night, slightly before curfew.

The creek where the body was found was not used for any activity after a leak from a sewer pipe spilled into it.

She said: “The woman lives far up the street, and we have never seen her around our home or the area around the creek. And people have stopped swimming in the creek as well because of the leak.

She said apart from the flashlights, they did not hear any noise that night nor did they see anyone at the creek the next morning. She said she did not know when the woman went for a swim and drowned.

Meanwhile, Police have not closed the case and Ms Naisoro said investigations continue.
