Less North Impact During Cody, Assessment Underway: Rainima
Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima.

Commissioner Northern, Uraia Rainima, says, the Northern Division did not have any severe impact during the fall of Tropical Cyclone Cody.

However, Mr Rainima says the Agriculture sector was the most affected by the flood.

He said they were expected to complete their Initial Damage Assessment of the different sectors (IDA) by yesterday.

“I am aware of the fact that crop damages were sustained because a good number of farms were submerged by the floods,” he said.

He said a team from the Ministry of Agriculture were carrying out their assessments to ascertain the level of crop and farm damages.

The IDA report is expected to be sent to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).

Evacuation centres

Four evacuation centres are active in the Northern Division.

Mr Rainima said he could not confirm the number of evacuees at the centres.

He said floodwaters did not affect the people directly.

He said they have carried out their food ration distribution to the villages of Nabevatu and Vunivesi in Savusavu.

Mr Rainima said this temporary assistance was provided to support families that immediately needed food supplies after TC Cody.

He confirmed that some families have returned to their homes.

Weather

Acting Director for Meteorological Services, Terry Atalifo, said they have not confirmed any information regarding another possible cyclone headed towards Fiji by next week.

Mr Atalifo said this was because of the uncertainty and timeframe that surrounds the confirmation of another cyclone.
