The newly upgraded Ellington Wharf in Rakiraki was officially commissioned today, marking a key milestone in strengthening inter-island connectivity and supporting economic growth in Ra and surrounding areas.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau officiated at the reopening, saying the project reflected the Government’s commitment to investing in critical transport infrastructure.
Ellington Wharf plays a vital role in linking Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, providing a sea connection between Rakiraki and Nabouwalu, and facilitating the movement of passengers and goods between Fiji’s two largest islands.

Speaking at the commissioning, Tuisawau said the upgraded facility represented more than just physical improvements.
“The reopening of Ellington Wharf underscores our broader vision to create reliable, safe and efficient transport links across Fiji. This wharf is a critical artery of economic activity, supporting local businesses, farmers and entrepreneurs by improving access to markets and reducing travel time,” he said.
The upgraded wharf is expected to improve safety and reliability for both passenger and freight services, contributing directly to economic activity in Rakiraki and surrounding communities.
Ro Filipe encouraged community members and stakeholders to work together to maximise the benefits of the facility and ensure its long-term sustainability.
He also acknowledged the contributions of engineers, contractors, planners and community leaders involved in the project.
As part of the works, the Fiji Roads Authority upgraded 366 metres of unsealed road and the jetty area to sealed standard, and installed five street lights to improve safety and accessibility at the wharf.
The reopening of Ellington Wharf was described as a symbol of progress and a shared commitment to building a more connected, resilient and prosperous Fiji.
