With just days to go before schools reopen for 2026, Suva is buzzing with parents preparing their children for the new school year. For first-time mother Diana Nasoga, the excitement is mixed with stress as she gets her young son ready for kindergarten.
“It’s exciting, but also stressful,” Ms Nasoga said.
“Prices have gone up a little, and we had to save over time just to manage.”

The government’s $200 back-to-school assistance, expected to be released this Friday, is a welcome help for families.
Retailers like CK Supermarket owner Jitesh Patel say the amount is sufficient if spent wisely.
“Stationery, shoes, uniforms, and a school bag can all be covered if parents plan carefully,” Mr Patel said.
“Most parents are using the money for their children, and prices haven’t increased significantly from last year.”
Mr Patel also advised parents to shop around, compare prices, and invest in quality items that last.
He emphasized that good nutrition is equally important, saying children perform better at school when they start the day with a healthy breakfast.
For Ms Naasoga, the focus is clear: giving her child a happy and prepared start to school.
“No matter how hard it is, we want our children to go to school ready and excited,” she said.
As the 2026 school year approaches, families across Suva are balancing excitement and financial pressures, showing that back-to-school is as much about love and preparation as it is about shopping.
