The 16 newly completed Public Rental Board (PRB) flats at Jittu Estate in Raiwaqa, Suva will be allocated exclusively to existing Jittu residents, says PRB general manager Timoci Naleba.
The $3 million housing project was officially opened by the Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday.
However, Mr Naleba said the selection process for tenants was still underway.

“The people who will come and occupy the new flats will be from Jittu, not from anywhere outside, as was practised in the past. For the 86 flats completed last year, and the 16 opened today (yesterday), all occupants will be selected from Jittu Estate,” he said.
Mr Naleba said applicants would have to meet strict eligibility criteria set by the PRB.
“We have learned from the past and believe there needs to be a process to ensure residents can, first, maintain a culture of paying for their homes and, second, access financial institutions and other avenues so they do not lose their flats if they choose to purchase them.
“The income threshold is a combined household income of $30,000 or less for anyone applying to occupy the flats.”
He confirmed the selection process had begun and expressed hope it would be completed soon.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to purchase their flats.
Speaking at the commissioning, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka urged future occupants to take pride in their new homes and help preserve the quality of the development and the wider community.
“Every new home represents dignity, security and opportunity. By providing safe, affordable and quality housing, your Government is creating an environment where families can thrive, children can pursue their education in stable surroundings, communities can contribute more effectively to social and economic development, and congregations can come together to worship.”
The PRB also plans to construct another 24 flats in the future.
